Abstract
The seminar focuses on the strategies which 19th and 20th century Switzerland adopted to map, naturalise or exploit the Alps economically, culturally and scientifically.
Objective
From a history of science and technology perspective, the Alps are a great object of study. They are a natural site to look at whether one is interested in processes of nation building and secularisation, the making of the modern self, the construction of scientific facts or the upswing of global communication in the 19th and early 20th century. The seminar focuses on the strategies which Swiss society adopted to map, naturalise or exploit the Alps economically, culturally and scientifically. Topics to be discussed range from agriculture, tourism, sports and health to military and engineering technology, cartography, geology and meteorology.
