Science, Politics and the Public
Wissenschaft, Politik und Öffentlichkeit
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:14:23
Abstract
Social controversies around nuclear energy, biotechnology, or nanotechnologies have entailed an increasing entanglement between science, politics, and the public in recent years. The 2-days lecture and workshop will explore such developments by drawing on theoretical concepts and case studies. Active student participation is expected.
Objective
The students are able to analyze the relations between science, politics, and society by applying concepts of science and technology studies.
Content
In recent years, science, politics, and the public have become more entangled. Social controversies around nuclear energy, biotechnology, or nanotechnologies have raised public’s interest in science policy and have increased science communication activities for the general public. At the same time, policy actors have been trying to involve the public in regulatory decisions at an early stage of scientific development and technological innovation. The 2-days lecture and workshop will explore such developments by drawing on theoretical concepts and case studies. Active student participation is expected.
