Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:13:42

Abstract

The course focuses on the use of stainless steels as alternative, more corrosion resistant materials in harshe environments. The second part regards the durability of post-tensioning tendons, presenting new developmens as electrically isolated tendons in plastic ducts or alternative high strength materials for the tendons. Case studies.

Objective

Vertiefte Vermittlung der Fähigkeit, die Umgebungsbedingungen an Bauwerken zu charakterisieren, hinsichtlich ihrer Aggressivität zu beurteilen und die richtige Werkstoffwahl zu treffen

Content

High durability and long service life in very aggressive environments can be reached only with the use of more corrosion resistant materials and systems. In a first part the use of stainless steels for different applications in civil engineering are presented: fasteners for application in tunnels or buildings, corrosion resistant rebars in concrete. The mechanisms of the high corrosion resistance of these materials are elaborated and discussed with several case studies. The second part focuses on the durability of post-tensioned tendons (both for bridges and anchorages). The corrosion hazard situation and corrosion risk of the traditional metal ducts are presented and confronted with the new plastic ducts developed by industry. Main emphasis is put on the electrically isolated tendons that can be monitored at all time during service life. The national and international guidelines are presented and application on pilot objects and on other structures are discussed.
