Abstract

In the course the students learn to measure X-ray diffraction patterns of minerals and to evaluate these using different software for qualitative and quantitative mineral composition as well as crystallographic parameters.

Objective

In the course the students learn to measure X-ray diffraction patterns of minerals and to evaluate these using different software for qualitative and quantitative mineral composition as well as crystallographic parameters. The course will be flexible. If there is an interest for it, the students can also learn to solve crystal structures from powder diffraction data and to refine these structures by the Rietveld method.

Content

Fundamental principles of X-ray diffraction Layout and operation of X-ray diffractometers Interpretation of powder diffraction data Determination of crystallographic parameters from powder patterns Qualitative and quantitative analysis of crystalline powders Methods of structure solution form powder diffraction data Rietveld refinement
