Abstract

Students write, present and discuss papers on topics related to the European economic integration. Topics to be dealt with are economic policy, trade, monetary integration and monetary union, financial integration, fiscal federalism and stability pact, labour markets, and EU enlargement.

Objective

The aim of this seminar is to enable students to individually pursue economic research based on recent scientific articles in the field of European integration. In that way, students may gain insight into current economic controversies regarding the effects of the European Union and its enlargement on several economic areas.

Content

Each participant is asked to choose one topic for an essay, which (s)he is expected to hand in and present in class. Furthermore, each participant has to discuss one of the other papers. Everyone attending the seminar is encouraged to participate actively and contribute to the discussion of each topic.

Resources

Literature

At the introductory meeting, which will be scheduled at the beginning of the semester, the topics will be distributed. Since there is different literature for every topic, each student will be assigned a tutor who provides a list of recommended readings. One basic book on European economic integration which we recommend for preparatory reading is “The economics of European integration” by Richard Baldwin & Charles Wyplosz, McGraw-Hill Education, 2004.
