Objective

The students are able to initiate and perform scientific and applied studies on groundwater chemistry based on a sound understanding of relevant physical and chemical principles. The students understand the chemical processes that govern the composition of ground water and sink processes of solutes. The students master a variety of evaluation and presentation methods and are able to apply specific software tools. The students know the applicable national and international laws and directives that are relevant to groundwater contamination, protection, and remediation. The students are able to plan and guide a scientific or applied hydrogeochemical study. The students can define the frontline of current research

Content

The evaluation of groundwater quality contributes to the solution of many problems in hydrogeology, e.g. determining recharge areas, groundwater dating, sustainable drinking water supply, corrosion/alteration of man-made materials, waste disposal, soil cultivation. Together with the "Isotope Hydrogeology", this course contains basic knowledge and example applications. A comprehensive education in the area of groundwater can be reached by booking this course - besides the compulsory coureses "Groundwater I" and "Hydrogeological Field Course" - together with "Isotope Hydrogeology", "Landfills and Deep Geological Disposal", and "Groundwater II".
