Physiology of Model Organisms

Abstract

The course describes the physiological systems of model organisms, with a particular focus on insects (in particular Drosophila), nematodes (in particular C. elegans), and the comparison to mammals.

Objective

Physiology is the description of how a living organism functions. Thus my aim is to describe the principles of physiology, with a focus on the functions of different organs within an organism, and how hormones regulate physiology. In particular, I will focus on key topics that are relevant to current research on human diseases (metabolic disorder, tumor progression). Thus I will combine textbook knowledge with results from recent papers. The student will learn how to compare model organisms (Drosophila, C. elegans) to mammals.

Content

Topics that will be covered: Hormonal regulation of physiology and development, control of metabolism and nutrients, insulin signaling, oxygen transport and control of respiration, glucose and lipid regulation, neurophysiology, immunology, circulatory systems and sexual behavior.
