Abstract

Working with complex problems, focussing specially on he human dimension. In this course we are looking at a rural development in the light of cultural identity. In our case studies special focus is given to social and cultural sustainability. In this way, we can evaluate the possibilities of empirical social research.

Objective

Working with complex problems, with a special focus on the human dimension.

Content

Part I: Rural development and rural culture: conflict between traditional structures and modern demands for high performance. Using the frame of the National Suisse Museum for rural culture we make acquaintance with the traditional structures and assess its values in todays modern world and evaluate possibilities for a progress without loss of soul. Part II: The second blockcourse takes place in canton Uri and canton Tessin/Grisans. The question of regional development planning in the light of social and cultural sustainability is the central theme. Case studies serve as frame to show possible ways how to include the outer rational dimension in concrete develoment programs.
