Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:13:56

Abstract

In this lecture, we discuss current research topics that are relatetd to understanding the problems and shortcomings of today's Internet technology. The lecture covers diverse aspects in traffic characteristics, streaming technologies, and novel network architectures (self-organizing networks, P2P networking). The students will read and understand relevant contributions found in the literature.

Objective

Understand the today's Internet and the challenge of upcoming applications. After this lecture, the students should be able to discuss I) the principles of networking; II) how network and traffic will change with uprising of new applications (statistical properties of network traffic) III) what a future Internet will look like and IV) how researchers tackle the problems today. Those topics are indeed in the focus of the research conducted at the communications systems research group CSG.

Content

Separated in three parts, the lecture discusses: Part I - Understanding the Internet: traffic characteristics, QoS. Part II: Streaming Technologies VoIP, Video streaming, Audio coding, signaling protocols SIP, RTP, H323 Part III - Self-organizing networks Peer-to-peer technology, overlay networking, active technologies, autonomous networking, ad hoc networks.
