Abstract
Water construction devices and their function within water systems are explained. The basic concepts of their layout and design with regard to economy and safety are provided.

Knowledge of water construction devices and their function within WATER SYSTEMS. Ability to layout and design with regard to economy and safey.
Content
Weirs: Weir stability, gates, rubber dams, appurtenant structures. Conduits: Design of head races, pressure shafts, and penstocks, hints concerning constructive details and construction. Power houses: Power house and turbine types, design, structure, construction. Dams: Dam types, appurtenant structures (diversion, spillways, bottom outlet), dam type selection criteria, layout and design of gravity dams, buttress dams, arch dams, rockfill dams with central core or concrete face, measures in the foundation, dam survey, mass concrete, RCC dams. Artificial reservoirs: Purpose, layout, sealing, appurtenant structures, environmental aspects. Natural hazards: Definition and characterisation, spatial planning measures, survey of risks such as floods, debris flows, earth slides, avalanches, glaciers. Navigation: Introduction into the subject (importance, economy, inland navigation, nautic behaviour of ships, natural and artificial waterways, harbours, sluices, ship lifts.
