Abstract

The course extends the basic concepts of relational data management introduced in an earlier course to examine the models and technologies required to support other forms of information management. These include semi-structured and XML data, object-oriented data and document retrieval systems.

Objective

The goal of the course is to provide students with an insight into the different paradigms of information management and how models and technologies are adapted to suit different application requirements.

Content

The course examines various models for the representation of data and provides an in-depth study of data modelling and metamodelling and how these can be used in both architectural and application design. Models and technologies for the management of semi-structured and XML data, object-oriented data and object-relational data are presented. The course then looks at different architectures and implementation strategies for the development of information systems based on relational and object-oriented technologies. Basic concepts of information retrieval are introduced along with a discussion of how these are used in document retrieval systems such as web search engines.
