Abstract
The course introduces students to the theoretical background of committee work in higher education. It enables students to develop skills and competences necessary for this work, such as chairing a meeting, participating and arguing effectively in discussions. The use of learning portfolios enables the students to reflect on their experiences and show explicitly how they have developed.
Objective
The students will 1. be introduced to the theoretical background of committee work in higher education, and be able to analyse their own experiences as members of such a committee 2. be trained to apply and develop key skills needed in such committee work 3. become aware of their own personal role and contribution in a committee by critically reflecting on their experiences and by documenting them in a learning portfolio 4. draw up their own competence profile and work on extending it
Content
This course is organised as follows: 1. 1-hour lecture on "Organisation and development of degree courses at ETH" by Dr. P. Frischknecht on Wednesday, 14.11.2007, 17.15 - 18.00 2. Block course on "Effective meetings", Saturday 27.10.2007, 8.30 - 12.30. Dr. P. Alean-Kirkpatrick 3. Block course on "Techniques for discussion and argumentation", Saturday 17.11.2007, 8.30 - 12.30. Dr. P. Alean-Kirkpatrick During these 2 block courses, the participants will be informed about how to write learning portfolios. 4. Application and reflection phase. The theoretical background will be applied to actual committee work, the experiences reflected and documented in a personal learning portfolio. Depending on the committee in question, this phase could take up to one year. During this time, the lecturer Dr. P. Alean-Kirkpatrick is available for advise and any questions that may arise. The requirements to gain credit for this course are as follows: 1. Full-time attendance at all three courses (Introductory lecture and 2 block courses) 2. Full-time attendance at at least 4 committee meetings, each lasting at least 2 hours, along with preparation and follow-up 3. Reflection and documentation of the experiences in a learning portfolio, and analysis of one's own personal skill development
