Abstract

This course offers an introduction to the methods we use in literary study to analyse the fuctioning of poems, plays and novels. It is intended for ETH students who want to broaden their horizon of English literature, and keep in touch with the language.

Objective

The aims of the course are for students to - practice their English - broaden their knowledge of English literature - have enjoyable reading experiences

Content

This course offers an introduction to the methods we use in literary study to analyse the functioning of poems, plays and novels. Such analysis is intended to help us understand how and why we enjoy books, and to give us a language with which we can discuss them. It is intended for ETH students who want to broaden their horizon of English literature, and keep in touch with the language. To do this, we will study three 'highlights' of English literature: William Blake, Songs of Innocence and Experience; James Joyce, Dubliners; Arthur Miller; Death of a Salesman.

Examination

Students will be required to write a short essay on the books discussed at the end of the course. This can be done at home, and is due to be handed in three weeks after the semester has ended.
