Abstract

The lecture examines the long-run effects of environmental policy on economic structural change. The focus of the analysis is on intersectoral, intrasectoral and regional structural effects. As driving forces behind the observed structural change preferences, prices, technological progress and institutional change are identified.

Objective

The aim is to develop a fundamental understanding of the long-term interdependency between economic development and environment and resource use whereby special attention is devoted to the potential impact of environmental policy measures.

Content

The lecture examines the long-run effects of environmental policy on economic structural change and its implications for sustainability. The focus is on intersectoral, intrasectoral and regional structural effects. Intersectoral effects thereby refer to the development of specific economic sectors (e.g. agriculture, industry) compared to aggregate economic development (with respect to e.g. production or employment). Intrasectoral effects describe the development within sectors and regional effects encompass, for example, repercussions on trade flows (keyword "eco-dumping") and "North-South" issues. As the driving forces behind structural change preferences, prices, technological progress and institutional change are identified.
