Plant Specific Topics of Cell Biology
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:13:17
Abstract
The plant specific topics in cell biology: vacuoles, cell wall, plasmodesmata and plastids will be discussed with respect to their function in the cormus and its physiology, during differentiation and development. An update with the recent literature will presented. Students will learn how to acquire literature and judge about papers in order to become independent researchers.
Objective
The major learning goals are: (1) To acquire the ability of interpreting results and (2) of reading and judging about scientific literature in this field, in order to supplement knowledge also beyond the time frame of the lecture. (3) The ability to integrate this knowledge into planning and performing of experiments in any field of plant science.
Content
The lecture will focus on the plant specific issues of cell biology. With regard to the mere facts, this includes particularly the vacuoles, the cell wall, and the plastids as typical plant specific organelles, but will also include systemic aspects like intercellular communication in a multi-cellular cormus as well as cellular interaction with symbiotic or pathogenic organisms. Knowledge about evolution will support the understanding of the system plant cell. The ability to integrate this knowledge into planning and performing of experiments will be strengthened by some examples about the history of discovery.
Resources
Lecture Notes
A skript will develop during the lecture and will be provided as PDF file accordingly on the website of the plant biotechnology group.
Literature
A particular text book is not suggested since the available books (Strasburger or Sitte) contain only small parts of plant specific (Sitte) or cell biology specific chapters (Strasburger) amongst a lot of other material. During the course of the lecture reprints of primary reserach reports will be distributed and discussed.
