Optimization of liberalized electric power systems
Optimierung liberalisierter elektrischer Energiesysteme
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:14:03
Abstract
Legal framework for regulated, network based electrical systems; Physical laws; Contrained network elements; Differences between electricity and regular market based products; Optimization for the solution of goal conflicts: Network based security of supply versus market requirements; (Non-linear) Optimization problems; Optimality conditions and solutions; Different electricity market models
Objective
Understand legal, economical and physical frame work for the "Liberalization of electrical power systems and networks". Understand the theory of mathematical optimization methods and algorithms for secure and economic network based electrical power systems. Develop ability to formulate optimization problem in the area. Get experiences with computer based solutions (simulation and algorithmic solution) of such non-linear optimization problems (e.g. Electric network congestion management) with Matlab. In general, get the knowlege to understand the most important problems of electricity markets and contribute to their solution.
Content
Legal framework for the realization of regulated network based electricity systems (CH, EU). Physical laws in network based electricity systems; physical limitaitons of network elements and of production; Difference of the product "Electricity" to "regular" market products and consequences; Optimization as mathematical tool for the solution fo goal conflicts between network based security of supply and market requirements; Mathetical types of optimization problems, related optimality conditions and algorithmic solutions (Unconstrained optimization methods; Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) optimality conditions; Equality constrained non-linear optimization; General non-linear optimization; Different market models (with/without network; with/without power generation limits; without/with power-frequency zones and cross-border transmission lines; with/without losses; with/without constrained network elements; with/without reactive power and voltage constraints); Algorithmic solutions applied to practical models and problems.
