Radiation measurements and climate
Strahlungsmessung in der Klimaforschung
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:14:47
Abstract
Fundamentals of radiation and description of radiative transfer. Shortwave solar and Total Solar Irradiance (TSI). Longwave terrestrial and atmospheric radiation and the greenhouse effect. Measurement of the shortwave and longwave radiation budget. Spectral measurements in shortwave, UV and PAR (Photosyntetically Active Radiation).
Objective
Basic understanding of radiation measurements and impact of radiation in meteorology and climate research.
Content
Fundamentals of radiation and description of radiative transfer. Shortwave solar and Total Solar Irradiance (TSI). Longwave terrestrial and atmospheric radiation and the greenhouse effect. Measurement of the shortwave and longwave radiation budget. Spectral measurements in shortwave, UV and PAR (Photosyntetically Active Radiation), in relation to aerosol optical depth, ozone, and CO2 content in the atmosphere. Comparison of radiation measurements and radiative transfer calculations.
