Abstract
Modernism in Italy: architecture and design
Objective
Deepen the basic knowledge
Content
There can be few periods in the history of architecture and art in which issues of the relationship between architecture and politics, as well as issues involving fracture lines within Modernism, arise as urgently as they do in Italian Modernism. In addition to the early utopias developed by the Futurists, the lecture-course will present examples of works from the Fascist period (1922–44) and examine them in their political and cultural context. The question of whether there was a specifically Italian reinterpretation of the architectural tradition and its key concepts will be reexamined on the basis of buildings from the postwar period.
