Content
The house is the oldest reason for building. It is of elementary significance for human beings, and the contribution it makes to the cultural contours of human societies is incalculable. This lecture-course will examine the functioning, typology, and aesthetics of houses, with an emphasis on historical and topographical aspects; in addition to the architectural tradition, the conceptual horizon involved in architectural theory will also be taken into account. While placing an emphasis on the modern period, the course will also refer back frequently to earlier developments in domestic architecture and will in this way provide the outlines of a historically comprehensive reconstruction of the architectural task. Contents include: the Greek and Roman house; villas; artists’ houses since the Renaissance; the English house; housing in America; reform houses; house and housing estate; the bungalow; utopian houses.
