Livestock Breeding and Genomics
Züchtungslehre
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:13:13
Abstract
Methods for analysing livestock data, in particular for the estimation of breeding values: Selection Index, correction of records for fixed effects, introduction to BLUP, application of common models used, relationship matrix, threshold model for the analysis of categorical data, methods for the estimation of variance components. Assignments applying the statistics programmes R and SAS.
Objective
The students are able to estimate breeding values for the most common population structures using the selection index. They are able to set up design matrices, the relationship matrix and its inverse as well as the Mixed Model equations to estimate BLUP breeding values for smaller examples. They know the use of the threshold model for the analysis of categorical data. They are able to apply the analysis of variance and to describe the REML method for the estimation of variance components.
Content
- Selection index (various sources of information, one trait, multiple traits) - Relationship matrix and its inverse - Correction of fixed effects - BLUP: one trait, repeated observations, multiple traits, economic indices - Threshold model - Introduction to methods for the estimation of variance components - Assignments
