Abstract
An overview of the theatre from antiquity to the transition to modernity creates the prerequisite due to which the modern theatre may be understood.The transition to the modern theatre will be presented as well as the phenomenon of ‘modern theatre’. The ‘avant-garde theatre’ will be explained structurally, whereas the different movements of the modern theatre will be discussed textually.
Objective
This two-hour-long lecture aims at deepening the students’ understanding of the theatre phenomenon structurally and textually by means of an overview of the epochs and of the presentation of the modern theatre. Competences: This lecture should enable the students to understand, classify and examine in a critical way the plays and performances, part of the traditional and modern repertoire. Methods: The lecture units alternate with the discussion of literary texts and performances.

Vorbemerkung: Die beiden Vorlesungsstunden sind grundsätzlich demselben Thema gewidmet, wobei in der zweiten Stunde die Lektüre und Diskussion von Theaterstücken im Vordergrund steht. Allgemeine Inhaltsangabe (gültig für beide Vorlesungen): Es wird erläutert, wie Theater grundsätzlich definiert werden kann. Ein Überblick über das Theater von der Antike bis zum Übergang zur Moderne soll die Voraussetzung für das Verständnis des Modernen Theaters schaffen.Behandelt werden die verschiedenen Theaterformen, die Theorien der Schauspeilkunst, die Spielräume und Bühnenformen. Anschliessend wird der Übergang zum modernen Theater im Kontext der Kunstentwicklung dargestellt und das Phänomen „Modernes Theater“ und „Avantgarde-Theater“ strukturell erläutert. Inhaltlich werden die verschiedenen Stilrichtungen des modernen Theaers besprochen ( Theaterreform um 1900 - futuristisches, expressionistisches und dadaistisches Theater, Theater am Bauhaus - absurdes Theater - politisches, episches und dokumentarisches Theater - freies Theater - Msiktheater u.a.). Schwerpunkte werden durch den aktuellen Spielplan des Theaters in Zürich und die Wahl der besuchten Aufführungen gesetzt, die in den Vorlesungen vor- und nachbesprochen werden.

Die Lektüre der Stücke wird dem aktuellen Spielplan der Zürcher Theater angepasst. Verweise zur Sekundärliteratur werden während der Vorlesung gegeben.
