Abstract

It is not by chance that Leonardo counts as an allround genius. Apart from his technical inventions he worked on mechanics, engineering and anatomy and created important works of painting and archicture. We will discuss this work in the historical context. Finally we will ask whether Leonardo’s crossing of art and science could serve as a model for contemporary research.

Objective

It is not by chance that Leonardo da Vinci (1452 – 1519) is seen as an allround genius. Apart from his technical inventions he worked on mechanics, engineering and anatomy and created important works of painting and archicture. We will discuss Leonardo’s work in the context of Renaissance science, culture and art. Finally we will ask whether this intersection of technical intelligence, scientific and artistic skills could serve as a model for contemporary research or wether it has to be treated as a lost ideal of the past.
