Abstract

This advanced, research-oriented seminar discusses a variety of topics in international political economy, such as trade and monetary policy preferences, credibility-enhancing institutions, distributional issues in a globalized economy and the recent debate about outsourcing and immigration.

Objective

The aim of the seminar is to enable students to understand and to critically evaluate arguments and empirical results presented in international political economy research.

Content

This advanced, research-oriented seminar discusses a variety of topics in international political economy. It begins with an overview of fundamental definitions and concepts in IPE. We then cover preferences in trade and monetary policy, questions of (international) credibility and the role of institutions in enhancing or decreasing such credibility. We then analyze the influence one particular institution, elections, has on economic policymaking. After discussing distributional concerns concerning voice, as well as welfare and fiscal policy, the seminar concludes by discussing the political economy of outsourcing and migration. In the course classic and more recent research in political economy is discussed and critically evaluated, with a particular focus on research design and empirical methodology. Students are required to write two short research papers and to discuss the research papers of their fellow students in class.
