Abstract

Whereas in medicine empiric thinking influences the solution of problems, in science an analytical approach is preferred. The lecture course should contribute to a better understanding between both fields by means of actual examples of orthopaedic research and development. A live-transmission of an operation at the Schulthess Clinic will complete the course.

Objective

The lecture course should contribute to a better understanding between engineering science and medicine by means of actual examples of orthopaedic research and development

Content

Engineers and physicians often approach research questions very different. Whereas in medicine empiric thinking influences the solution of problems, in science an analytical approach is preferred. These differences may result in large communication problems. The lecture course should contribute to a better understanding of the other field by means of new orthopaedic trends. Actual examples will include interdisciplinary treatment concepts, minimal-invasive surgical procedures, principles of joint replacement, modern emergency strategies and basics of implant anchorage in osteoporotic bone. The necessary basics will be given in every lecture. Based on this new research findings will be presented and discussed with the participants. A live-transmission of an operation at the Schulthess Clinic will complete the course.
