Abstract

Concepts, methods and techniques to apply computerbased techniques in the architectural design, in communication and in the visualization of information

Content

This new course will provide a theoretical and practical introduction to Information Architecture. Inspired by many built and virtual examples, we will discuss the consequences when information space and physical architecture are merged. You will receive an introduction to the next generation design process of architects and to theoretical concepts in the transition of information management. You will also learn about emerging academic fields such as knowledge visualization and simulation for architects. The eight lectures will be highly interactive and discuss visionary case studies and new techniques. With your individual or group project you will contribute experimental and original insights. There are four different well-prepared exercises from which you can choose ONE exercise. Either you (a) experiment with the latest simulation tools for architects, (b) develop a real life knowledge visualization project in the context of Science City, (c) program a new interactive visualization with Flash or Processing, or (d) develop a business plan for architectural services for "Second Life" users. Original projects can be developed further into a “Diplomwahlfacharbeit”. If non German speaking students participate the course, the language will be English, otherwise it can be German. Apart from learning about and experiencing Information Architecture, the course will also introduce you to research and management skills that will distinguish the future trained ETH Architect. Therefore, the course Information Architecture will have an impact on your career, both inside and outside of the discipline of architecture.
