Abstract

Technology and use of wood, synthetics, metals and glass as building materials

Objective

Understanding of the most important material properties of wood, synthetics, metals and glass for building materials. Fundamental knowledge of physical properties, process technologies and technical use of these materials in architecture.

Content

This course furthers the study of the technology of building materials - wood, synthetics, metals and glass. Wood: We will deepen our knowledge of solid woods and wooden materials and consider ways and means to promote and sustain long term functionality of wooden buildings. Synthetics: We will further our knowledge of the fundamentals and applicability of synthetics in relation to characteristics of plastics used as sealant, piping, heat insulation and cladding. Metals: The course focuses on the properties and the use of coloured metals, alloys and steel for structural and design applications and it will extend students’ knowledges of corrosion, protection against corrosion, surface treatment, the technology of alloys and the influence of metals to the environment. Glass: Knoeledge about material properties, production processes, coatings, physical properties and technical references to the use of glass in architecture.
