Abstract

This course deepens the understanding of the dependency of architecture on architectural technology, production and formal expression in the 20th century. Possibilities and developments in the building industry are analysed by means of actual examples.

Objective

Romeo and Juliet Hans Scharouns residential high rises in Stuttgart (1954-1959) Hans Scharoun built the two residential high rises „Romeo and Juliet“ from 1954-59 in Stuttgart, creating two of the most exceptional residential buildings of the postwar period. In contrast to the contemporary practice of standardization and use of types, he realized two multi-story buildings characterized by complex shapes and surprising polymorphy. With his design of the balconies at varying angles, the roof line or the studio apartments, he created an irritating effect reminiscent of his expressionist period. He resisted repetition, directness and predictability of form to counter the problem of monotony in social housing. Rather than following any modular or serial rule, the highly unorthodox configuration of the apartments results from a process of accumulation and polyphony. His analysis of orientation, day lighting, multiple forms of access, and the functional relationships within a dwelling, leads him to solutions that differ from common organizing principles. For these complex solutions, he needs to leave the modular grid and the right angle behind The project will be analysed by reconstructing the design process, and key insights from the analysis will be visualized separately. The different apartments, including unbuilt designs, will be built as models to be used for spatial examination. The course will be accompanied by lectures about urban development, floor plan typology and the domestic culture of the 1950s, as well as on the question of architectural form and its relation to biological analogy.
