Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:18:32

Abstract

Mammalian cells will be transfected and transduced with viral vectors for production of biopharmaceuticals, for generation of artificial microtissues, as vectors in gene/cell therapy studies, for drug discovery as well as for construction of synthetic biologic gene networks. A wide array of analytical techniques, lectures and excursions to biotech companies will complement the practical part.

Objective

Independent planning and conducting of experiments with mammalian cells including all steps from culturing different cell lines to DNA transfection / transduction and expression analysis by means of a wide array of analytical methods.

Content

Practical course on characterization and cultivation of mammalian cells, DNA transfer by transfection, siRNA for silencing genes, construction of synthetic gene networks, analysis of gene expression by enzymatic and immunological methods and fluorescent proteins, immunoprecipitation and Western blotting, fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS), microinjection of DNA into the nucleus of cells, purification of proteins expressed in mammalian cells by HPLC, mammalian cell-based assays for drug discovery and diagnostics, microencapsulation of mammalian cells, plant cell biotechnology as an alternative to mammalian cells, viral vectors for transduction of mammalian cells. Excursions to biotech/pharma companies.
