Abstract

This lecture deals with the ecological and waste-minimizing design of products developed and produced in different industrial sectors. Eco-design strategies, methods and tools are presented for the chemical, automotive, electronics, and building & construction sectors.

Objective

- Acquiring knowledge and skills in ecological and waste-minimizing product design (eco-design) - Learning how to integrate eco-design in product development - Obtaining knowledge of basic methods and tools applied for eco-design (e.g., knowing how to improve energy consumption, materials application, chemical content, packaging, recyclability, etc.) - Getting insight in regulatory drivers and instruments - Getting insight in (socio-)economic drivers in business - Understanding the environmental and business value chain

- Environmental approaches framing ecological and waste-minimizing product design (eco-design) - Drivers for eco-design in businesses - Regulatory drivers and legislation - Integration of eco-design into product development - General strategies, methods and tools for eco-design - Eco-design in the chemical industry - Sustainable vehicle design in the automotive industry - Eco-design of buildings, infrastructures and settlements - Eco-design in the electrical/electronics industry
