Lightweight Structures Laboratory
Strukturlabor
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:18:53
Abstract
Each team has to design, size, and manufacture a structure complying with given specifications. Structural testing with regard to stiffness and strength criteria builds the base for discussions about the quality of the design, accuracy of the sizing and design improvements.
Objective
Develop the skills to identify and solve typical problems of the structure mechanics. Other important aspects are to: Foster team work and team spirit Link theoretical knowledge and practice Gather practical experiences in various fields related to lightweigt structures such as Design, different CAE-methods and structural testing.
Content
The task of each team (4-5 students) is the realisation of a typical load-carrying structure. The teams are free to develop and implement their own ideas. In this context, specified requirements only include information about loads, interface to the surrounding structures, and a limited budget which cannot be exceeded. The project is structured according to four phases as described below: - Concept development, preliminary sizing and design of the part - FEM simulation and manufacturing of the part - Structural testing - Report Project work is supported by selected teaching units.
