Abstract

Disciplinary and interdisciplinary excursions are offered. Their focus is on agricultural topics as well as on topics along the food chain. They are organised on a weekly, full day basis.

Objective

Excursions are meant to motivate students, to offer orientation and to encourage system orientated thinking. Students mobilize theories, combine them to practical experience to finally gain in-depth knowledge on the subject. Visits to companies and farms and field work are, among other activities, organized to meet the target.

Content

The focus is on animal and plant sciences including interdisciplinary components. By visiting companies and farms and by doing practical field work, students get insight into the following areas: soil and its cultivation, plant breeding, cultivation and nutrition, pest management, livestock husbandry, animal breeding and nutrition, milk and meat production, trace gas in agriculture, alpine economics. Two excursions for students in agricultural and foods sciences are organized, to demonstrate context and interactions between the two disciplines along the food chain (Filière Agro-Alimentaire), e.g. fodder aspects with a view to cheese production or the influence of the agroecosystem on food quality.
