Engineering Tool V: Computer-based Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
Ingenieur-Tool V: Computergestützte Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:18:54
Abstract
Getting to know and practising of the FMEA-approach (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis), that is an established technique of risk analyis and quality control in industry (automotive engineering, aviation, medical technology, etc.). The technique is originally table based and has currently become a widely used computer based approach in practice.
Objective
The FMEA-technique is an established tool in risk analysis, reliability analysis and also of quality control in production engineering and system analysis. This tool-course presents the basic knowledge of the FMEA (methodology, implementation, analysis) and the performing of a case study (organisation of an incident documentation, FMEA implementaion, risk minimising measures). A focus is the risk representation as a tool for risk communication within companies.
Content
The course gives the basics of FMEA as well as in risk analysis. This also includes the structure of a computer based documentation of component failures and incidents (libraries); implementation of a FMEA by using a professional FMEA software package; assessment of the risk priority value by its parameters frequency, consequence and detectability; risk representation using F/C-diagrams (frequency, consequence); organisation of risk reducing measures (system optimisation) by FMEA. All basics are exemplified and practised by a case study.
