Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:19:39
Abstract
Gothic architecture in France and England (1140 - 1260)
Objective
Ziel der Vorlesung ist die Vermittlung grundlegender Kenntnisse der gotischen Architektur in Frankreich und England.
Content
A selection of the most important buildings of the French and English gothic are examined in their respective historical context and for their art-historical position. The task of building cathedrals will take the centre stage of the lecture, but abbey churches and everyday buildings are considered likewise. Apart from monographic investigations, comprehensive questions regarding gothic architecture are put up for discussion. Thus the emergence of the modern profession of the architect and the enquiry for a gothic architectural theory will also play a role. Finally, matters of civil engineering, the use of materials, the meaning of building forms, and their interpretation are addressed. The lecture wants to give an outline of gothic architecture in France and England and provide an insight into one of the most fascinating epochs of Europe, a time of mental, economic and technical innovation.
