Objective
The lecture serves as introduction in the design of detectors.
Content
The lecture describes in the first part the basic background of physics about interaction of particles with matter. This knowledge is necessary to understand the technique to detect a particle. The following content is forseen: Interaction of charged particles with matter ( Energy loss of heavy and light particles in matter, energy and angular straggling, Bremsstrahlung, Cerenkov effect and scintillation light ) and interaction of electromagnetic radiation with matter ( Photo-effect, Thomson scattering, Compton-effect, pair-production and annihilation ). In the second part of the lecture the detector technology to identify particles get discussed sorted after measurement of the track, the time, energy and momentum. The following content is forseen: measurement of the track coordinates of particle ( Micro Strip detector, Pixel detector, multi wire proportional chamber, drift chamber, bubble chamber, streamer chamber, flash chamber and spark chamber ), time measurement ( Scintillator, photo multiplier and light collection ), energy measurement ( Electromagnetic shower detector and Hadron calorimeter ) and momentum measurement ( Measurement at fixed target and at storage rings ).
