Biology IV: Adaptations of organisms in aquatic habitats
Biologie IV: Anpassung der Organismen aquatischer Standorte
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:18:39
Abstract
Adaptations of organisms to aquatic habitats
Objective
To understand the link between environmental factors and the particular adaptations that enable organisms to exist in different environments and influence species diversity
Content
The course consists of 2 lectures (total 6 hrs) 2 practicals (2 hrs each) 2 exkursions (4 hrs each) Summaryday (4 hrs): Student presentations Dates: 27.3. Lecture (13-17, Räsänen) 3.4. Excursion I (13-17) 10.4. Excursion II (13-17) 17.4. Lecture (13-17, Jokela) 15.5. Practical I (group A: 13-15, group B: 15-17) 22.5. Practical II (group A: 13-15, group B: 15-17) 12.6. Zusammenfassung bei Studierende (13-17) The lectures consist of a general introduction to the basic factors that organisms have to deal with in the different aquatic environments, the specific adaptations that organisms have to these environments, and introductions to the methods to be used in the field exkursions and practicals. The exkursions consist of students collecting material in small groups: sampling aquatic invertebrates with standard methods and measuring basic habitat features. This year the exkursion sites are two different streams. The practicals consist of students working on the material they collected in the field. Primarily this is identifying the sampled taxa and trying to identify the features (for example, morphology) that enable a given species to live in aquatic environments and in the specific streams. The Summary day is an important part of this course. During this day, the students will give short presentations (in groups) on the material that they collected in the field and topics that are related to the course. The idea is to try to understand the link between the habitat features that were measured and the species composition that was observed in the field.
