Abstract

The lecture discusses medicinal plants and herbal medicines and their common medical uses (cf. lecture course PB I). During the SS the focus is on alkaloids and essential oils. In addition, the theoretical foundations of the lab course Pharmaceutical Biology II will be discussed.

Objective

The understanding of the biosynthesis of plant-derived natural products. Acquisition of fundamental knowledge on the medical application of important herbal medicines and of isolated natural products (general indication areas, molecular constituents of medicinal plants and herbal medicines in general, molecular constituents responsible for pharmacological activity, possible mechanisms of action, available clinical data to support medical use). In addition, theoretical foundations for the lab course Pharmaceutical Biology II (LV-Nr. 50-349).

Content

Continuation of the lecture course Pharmaceutical Biology I (LV-Nr. 535-0341) with the same general focus on the structure/biosynthesis of plant-derived natural products and the pharmacological effects/therapeutic applications of biogenic drugs of plant origin (herbal medicines based on plant extracts as well as isolated natural products). Classes of plant constituents (and the associated herbal drugs), which are discussed in the lecture course Pharmaceutical Biology II are alkaloids and essential oils. In addition, the theoretical foundations for the lab course Pharmaceutical Biology II will be discussed in the first part of the course (including extraction methods, chromatographic methods for the separation and purification of natural products, chemical methods for the identification of natural product classes).
