Safety of Nuclear Power Plants

Abstract
Improved knowledge about safety requirements of nuclear power plants and their implementation in deterministic safety cases and safety equipment. Knowledge about accident behavior and the methods of probabilistic risk analysis and how to handle results. Identification of possibilities for optimization of nuclear systems incl. the fuel cycle.
Objective
Understanding of the physical basics, functioning and safety properties of nuclear power plants, explanation of safety concepts and their implementation into system requirements and system design. Dealing with design basis accident and more severe postulated accident scenarios and related physical phenomena. Learning of the methods of probabilistic risk analysis, representation and assessment of results. Learning from occurred accidents. Identification of possibilities for optimization and properties of advanced sustainable nuclear systems.
Content
Safety problems and safety philosophy, resulting design principles. Safety systems, their functionality and reliability. Effects of radioactivity. Accident description and deterministic analysis, especially of nuclear thermo hydraulic transients; behavior in case of beyond design accidents and respective physical phenomena. Results of risk estimations, uncertainties and their causes. Use of operation and accident experience. Advanced safety requirements and inherent safety reactor concepts. Sustainable fuel cycles.
