Abstract

Subject of the lecture "Building Services" is the Integration of Building Services into the Architectural design. Focuses will be the task of the architect in the planning process, the instruments of planning and to transmit the necessary knowledge by examples.

Objective

The lecture BS II (Building services II) shows the integration of all technical installations (HVCSE) in the building desing and demonstrates the instruments in the planning process. (construction and simulation). The tasks of the architect in the planing process are outlined and the knowlege therefore is tought.

Content

An introduction to building installations, including air conditioning, electricity supplies (both high voltage supplies and low voltage current), the installation of lifts, conveyor belt and loading bay systems is presented. The basics will be dealt with through the stages of concept, pre-design, and design. Criteria for evaluating building systems and their components will be explored. The interrelationship between a building’s functional requirements and the technology available for its realisation, will be discussed. Students also learn how to calculate the necessary area and height, which will be taken up by technical installations, shafts and required empty spaces for such installations, in a building. The pros and cons of centralized or decentralized supply systems will be discussed. Other topics include: coordination and planning of the construction sequences: pre-design through design; less technology through correct design; facades; storage construction. Practical exercises on ‘real life’ building projects will be undertaken.
