Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:19:39
Abstract
Definitions of Architecture: The lecture series starts with a comparison of various attempts at defining architecture and a discussion of their areas of overlap. Concepts are juxtaposed: nature and technique as conceptually opposed spheres, or the myth of the ‘timeless path’, versus the building as an autonomous work of art.

Fifth Semester: Definitions of Architecture: The lecture series starts with a comparison of various attempts at defining architecture and a discussion of their areas of overlap. Concepts are juxtaposed: nature and technique as conceptually opposed spheres, or the myth of the ‘timeless path’, versus the building as an autonomous work of art. Examples from contemporary architecture are used to demonstrate the many layers of terminology and significance in architectural theory. The aesthetics of the built work are complimented by the aesthetics of the everyday and of nature. Theory’s goal is to clarify and to describe this condition. Finally, the course asks whether design as a process of reflection and projection already represents a utopian dimension of architecture. Sixth Semester: The Building and the Construction of Theory: The second series of lectures studies existing models of the construction of theory in the works of specific architects. How does a coherent architectural language of form arise? How is it conceptualized by the architects themselves? How is it verbalized, how does it find expression in a theory, and how is it interpreted by critics ? What is the role of conventions in this process? Departing from these, and similar, questions, the course seeks insights into the dialectics between built work and theory, or, rather, between built work and interpretation.
