Last Updated: 2026-02-05 14:59:09
Abstract
Film versions of literature have existed as long there have been films. Equally old are the controversies concerning whether turning literature into film is at all permissible and justified.
Content
Film versions of literature have existed as long there have been films. Equally old are the controversies concerning whether turning literature into film is at all permissible and justified. Literature buffs often consider the usurpation of literature by film to be parasitic, using literature merely to give itself an artistic aura. From this point of view, films based on literature can only seem fakes or mutilations. Some scholars, on the other hand, distrust films based on literature. They want instead to understand films as an art form in its own right, independent of literature. Lectures and colloquia will offer opportunities to explore the specific ways of storytelling in these two media, using four literary works and their film versions to help participants discover their own perspective: 1. Gottfried Keller: „Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorfe“ 2. Meinrad Inglin: „Der schwarze Tanner“ 3. Wolfgang Koeppen: „Das Treibhaus“ 4. Max Frisch: „Skizze eines Unglücks“
