Abstract

Building power

Objective

The themes considers historical periods more deeply. Personalities or specific topics will be examined paradigmatically. Besides the transmition of knowledge the main intention is an introduction into the methodology of historical research. Active participation by students is required.

Content

Besides meeting functional requirements or making a purely aesthetic statement, buildings represent the social status, reputation and prestige of their owners. In the realms of politics especially, they tend to demonstrate the power of the ruling system as well as personal claims of individuals. The seminary will present exemplary building typologies, traditional strategies of legitimation, but also hypertrophic failures from antiquity until today.
