Abstract

The elective is the starting point for an investigation concerned with the development of Pairi-daeza, Persian for "a wall enclosing an orchard or garden", to the garden typology 'Paradise'. A small typology of enclosure will be discussed in the lectures. Characteristics of demarcation will also form the subject for a site-specific intervention in the Hönggerberg woods.

Objective

Supported by lectures, specialist advice and tutorials, students will be asked to work with themes related to demarcation to transform a chosen area of the Hönggerberg woods within given parameters. The students will be asked to engage with a subjective approach to reading landscape; surveying and mapping a site; landscape model making; model based design processes; documenting the design process and realising a small project.

Content

Pairi-daeza is Persian for "a wall enclosing an orchard or garden". This term is the starting point for a six-semester investigation concerned with the development of Pairi-daeza to the garden typology 'Paradise'. The first elective explores the aspect pairi (from Greek peri) and with it themes related to demarcation and enclosure. Encompassed within this typology, examples of demarcation, wall, fence, hedge and topography will be discussed in five lectures. Characteristics of demarcation will also form the subject for a site-specific intervention in the Hönggerberg woods within given parameters. A guided walk with Günther Vogt + team will open the discussion in which students will be encouraged to engage in a subjective approach to cartography and respond to the landscape. They will be asked to measure a chosen site and make a detailed map and 1:20 model which will become the working tool for the development of a site specific proposal. A selected proposal will be realised on site by the group.
