Content

This course, despite its name, does not focus on the problem of designing individual architectural objects. Instead, it attempts to convey interdisciplinary approaches and methods which help to connect the products of design – mostly architectural design – to the culture of their time. The topics are not investigated in chronological order: interpretation is more important than temporal localization. Participants are asked to transcend the borders between the various fields of culture and thereby to create associations between architecture, literature, filmmaking and music. Design is understood as a realm of the artificial in which not only objects, but also systems of communication or organized activities originate. The topics of each series of seminars, such as ‘Skin’, ‘Time’, ‘Identity’, ‘Atmospheres’ or ‘Beauty’, are chosen so as to allow not one, but many different contextualizations. Student papers are ntegrated into the framework of the seminar. A critical approach to methods and frames of mind is encouraged in the analysis of well-known texts and case-studies of architecture, urbanism, and art. The students are asked to formulate and specify personal points of view when presenting their text and object analyses.
