Abstract

Basic understanding of the modern building materials metals, wood, polymers and composites in the context of architecture by using the theoretical basics, examples from practice and ongoing research projects.

Objective

Wood Specific properties and characteristics of wood and wood-based composites are discussed in detail. Comprehensive knowledge is presented to apply these materials in building and construction in accordance with the expected functions and exposure stresses. Recent developments of products and technologies to be used in modern timber constructions are presented, and the significance of wood as a renewable resource for sustainable buildings is discussed. Polymers The focus aims at the specific properties of thermoplastics, elastomers and thermosets as materials for the fassade, roof and building technology. Preferred applications are floor heating and sanitary piping systems, transparent building envelope, waterproofing, thermal isolation and fiber reinforced polymers. Metals The course addresses the properties and specific applications of metals as building materials. For instance facades or roofs made out of copper, zinc, aluminium, corten or stainless steel. Insights of corrosion behaviour, corrosion prevention and surface treatments will be given. Questions of environmental pollution due to metals degradation will be answered.

Wood: by K. Richter Specific properties and characteristics of wood and wood-based composites are discussed in detail. Comprehensive knowledge is presented to apply these materials in building and construction in accordance with the expected functions and exposure stresses. Recent developments of products and technologies to be used in modern timber constructions are presented, and the significance of wood as a renewable resource for sustainable buildings is discussed. Polymers: by P. Flüeler (an Stelle von Synthetics) The focus aims at the specific properties of thermoplastics, elastomers and thermosets as materials for the fassade, roof and building technology. Preferred applications are floor heating and sanitary piping systems, transparent building enveloppe, waterproofing and fiber reinforced polymers. Metals: by O. von Trzebiatowsky (summer cours no 051-0526-00L) The course addresses the properties and specific applications of metals as building materials. For instance facades or roofs made out of copper, zinc, aluminium, corten or stainless steel. Insights of corrosion behaviour, corrosion prevention and surface treatments will be given. Questions of environmental pollution due to metals degradation will be answered.
