Basics of Engineered Risk Analysis
Grundlagen der technischen Risikoanalytik
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:06:01
Abstract
Comprehensive look into risk and safety issues of major technical systems and respective analysis techniques. Inclusion of environmental risks because of accidental releases of substances. Beginnings of an integral risk management. Practical case studies.
Objective
Comprehensive look into risk and safety issues of major technical systems including the impacts on man and environment. For this, basic tools are introduced (i.e. specified analysis techniques and computer based tools) and deepened by exercises. The starting point of this questions thereby is a technical system (e.g., a chemical plant), which releases substances and energies because of undesired events and event chains (i.e. scenarios). Both have an impact on the einvironment via release paths and represent a quantifiable risk. Risk analysis uses appliances from various engineering and scientific disciplines and is embedded in a legal framework. Further, methodological approaches of an integral risk management and corresponding decicision processes are indtroduced and illustrated by case studies.
Content
Term definitions ans system boundaries, hazard identification methods, system modelling and scenario analysis, estimation of event probabilities and consequences of incidents, basic principles in safety engineering, handling of specified problem areas in risk analysis, e.g., judgement of human failures, handling of uncertainties, modelling and simulation of dangerous substance releases, basic approaches of risk assessment and strategies of risk reduction. Computerbased risk estimation (stationary plants, transportation of dangerous goods), and risk representation.
