Abstract
Diseases and abiotic damages have major impacts on the utilization and conservation of forest ecosystems, tree populations and individual trees. The course conveys basic knowledge on important infectious diseases and abiotic damages of woody plants with emphasis on Central Europe.
Objective
Understanding of disease etiology, diagnostic methods and disease control strategies. Knowledge of ecologically and/or economically important tree and forest diseases.
Content
The concept of 'Forest Health', history of forest pathology, environment and disease, pathogenesis and defence, basics of epidemiology, Principles of tree management. Morphology, biology, diagnosis and control of selected pathogens (parasitic phanerogams, fungi, bacteria, viruses and viroids). Morphology of mycorrhiza. Damages to woody plants caused by abiotic environmental factors.
