Abstract

Semiclassical and quantum mechanical treatment of light-matter interaction; Quantized fields; Statistical properties of radiation; Theoretical and experimental elements of laser spectroscopy.

Objective

The student will be introduced to concepts of light-matter interaction with an emphsis on laser spectroscopy. The course will pursue a balance between the semiclassical and quantum mechanical descriptions of the phenomena at hand with an emphasis on direct links to laboratory concerns.

Content

Semiclassical and quantum mechanical treatment of light-matter interaction: absorption and emission of light, transition probabilities, rate equations, Rabi oscillations, Bloch equations, density matrix formulation, resonance fluorescence and light scattering; Quantized fields; Statistical properties of radiation; Theoretical and experimental elements of spectroscopy: sources of line broadening, frequency resolved and time resolved spectroscopy, saturation spectroscopy, polarization spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, photon echos, optical nutation, Fourier transform spectroscopy
