Abstract

Problem oriented course in scientific computing with emphasis onoptimization and modeling.linear and nonlinear least squares, sensitivity analysis, constraint minimization (Lagrange multipliers),conjugate gradient method,SVD,Linear programming, support vector classification, variational calculus, linear filter theory, nonlinear diffusion, dynamic programming, parsimony

Objective

The course summarizes important concepts of scientific computing which are related to optimization, variational calculus and demonstrates these methods on problems from bioinformatics, and computer vision.

Content

Problem oriented course in scientific computing: Each problem class is related to a set of methods from optimization, minimization and modeling. P1: localization of an aircraft M1: nonlinear least squares, error and sensitivity analysis, constraint minimization (Lagrange multipliers), conjugate gradient method P2: secondary structure prediction of proteins M2: Least squares, singular value decomposition, nearest neighbor, Linear programming, support vector classification and convex optimization P3: image restauration modelling, motion computation M3: variational calculus, linear filter theory, Fourier transformation, parabolic PDEs, nonlinear diffusion, P4: phylogenetic tree inference M4: dynamic programming, parsimony, Branch and Bound
