Abstract

he chair for CAAD at the department of architecture, ETH Zürich, researches the use of current information technologies as an augmentation of the concept of architecture. This extended definition covers; design support through means of digital media, design, fabrication & building with computer controlled machines, and intelligent building services.

Objective

Throughout the studies the participants expand their proficiencies in modelling, computer based design, construction, production, multimedia presentation, and marketing. These skills augment thier capabilities as architects, incorporate new fields of activities and help to expand the definition of architecture as a whole.

Content

The main focus of the MAS program is computer aided architectural design and its automated production: • parameterized caad, which enables an adaptable client based architecture through individual and quickly modifiable drawing. • multimedia based interaction systems which use programmed behaviours to extend digital designs beyond purely paper-based presentations • internet based interaction enabling new forms of product development and marketing • Object Oriented Programming which defines organization structures in software design, and the application of this concept to architecture and the design of physical buildings. This concept of programming is the basis for computer generated architecture • CNC production enables the physical production of individual architectural items using cutting and milling machines at the department The MAS course is divided into approximately 7-8 seminar based modules. The program concludes with a master thesis. In the modules basic knowledge and skills are obtained. n the modules basic knowledge and skills are obtained. Each module is concluded with an assignment. The average module duration amounts to 3-4 weeks. The final thesis is then an application of the cumulative skills & knowledge, merged with a specific question. The thesis relates the range of interests from the Chair of CAAD to the specific methodology of architecture. The average duration of the thesis is approximately 3 months.
