Abstract
Chicago: The invention of Modernism
Objective
Deepen the basic knowledge
Content
After the great fire of 1879, the rebuilding of Chicago led to the emergence of American Modernism. Henry H. Richardson, Louis H. Sullivan, Daniel H. Burnham, and others concentrated initially on the building of the Loop, Chicago’s city center, where new approaches to urban architecture were explored in office buildings, hotels, and buildings dedicated to the arts. Around the turn of the century, Frank Lloyd Wright and the Prairie School founded a form of domestic architecture in the western suburbs that fused America’s traditions and myths with contemporary needs. A further trend was then set by the contributions of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, who from his base in Chicago set the course for postwar Modernism. The lecture-course will identify the characteristics and programs of the three Chicago Schools and investigate their interactions with European Modernism
